Dog Training Problems
I use the term training problems, yet what we humans view as training problems with our dogs is often simply down to a breakdown in communication. In the context of canine - human interaction we need to effectively communicate with our dogs to let them know what we humans see as acceptable and appropriate behaviour.
Clicker training is an effective, kind, and fun way of communicating with your dog, enabling you to work through training problems. Through the application of operant conditioning you can modify your dogs behaviour based on the consequence of his/her reactions to stimuli. This will give your dog confidence in knowing what works for us humans and what does not work.
For example, take jumping up. If you observe two dogs playing together, a small dog and a large dog, you will see that the small dog jumps up a lot, this is normal canine behaviour. Dogs being dogs only know how to behave like dogs, so they will offer the same jumping up behaviour to us humans. It is therefore our responsibility to modify this behaviour by conditioning an alternative desirable behaviour.
I would imagine that you would prefer for your dog to sit when greeting you or other humans. Clicker training is so effective at communicating what works, that within a few short sessions the behaviour of jumping up will be replaced by the behaviour of sitting.
Clicker training can help you resolve these common training problems:
- Excessive barking
- Jumping up
- Pulling on leash
- Puppy biting & nipping
- Digging
- Food/toy guarding
- Inappropriate chewing
- Inappropriate defecation
- Inappropriate urination
Consultations
I offer one-2-one in-home consultations for dog training problems. The initial consultation is 2 hours, and it is preferable to have the whole family present.
Following consultation I will draw up a personalised clicker training program for you to progress with. Previous experience of clicker training is not necessary as detailed instruction will be given at your consultation.
Typically only an initial consultation is required but if further consultation is needed this is offered on an hourly basis.
Ongoing support is provided via phone, e-mail, and Skype.
