Dog Walking Locations
I believe that all dogs need to have daily off-leash walks, this is good for their mind and body. East Sussex is blessed with an abundance of countryside walks, and through my travels with my own canine companion Harley, I have selected some of the best locations for dog walking.
I have chosen locations based on following criteria:
- Safety - away from roads and traffic
- Way marked - clear easy to follow trails and paths
- Popular - but not crowded, giving your dog the opportunity to socialise without getting overly distracted
- Varied - woodland, open fields, ponds, hills, valleys, forest, rivers, streams, giving your dog lots to explore
- Parking - easy access with parking onsite
Highwoods - Bexhill
Highwoods in Bexhill is 87 acres of woodland, with a few small ponds dotted around, and a stream. It has 3 easy to follow trails, which combined make a good hour walk.
Powdermill Wood - Battle
Powdermill Wood forms part of the 1066 country walk which runs from Pevensey to Rye. It has a public footpath which takes you through woodlands, open fields, bridle paths, and along a stream.
Brede High Woods - Sedlescombe
Brede High Woods lies within the High Weald AONB in East Sussex, approx 6 miles north of Hastings. At 648 acres it is currently the biggest Woodland Trust site in England. The walk takes in coppice, ancient woodland, small ponds, springs, and streams.
Guestling Wood - Hastings
Guestling Wood is situated near the village of Pett, near Hastings, in the East Sussex High Weald. A small stream known as Lady Brook follows most of the western boundary, with its source being close to the southern boundary of the wood.
The wood is crossed by 4 public footpaths and has a good network of rides and paths which link to the surrounding countryside. There is a small car park at the main entrance to the wood, off Watermill Lane.
Fairlight - Hastings
Fairlight offers valleys, coastlines, and ancient woodland. The village lies 3 miles to the east of Hastings, off the A259. By the church there is a lane which leads to the Hastings Country Park, which stretches for 5 miles from Fairlight to Hastings. Fairlight is very popular for dog walkers, and a round trip walk gives your dog plenty of fresh sea air and exercise.
Abbots Wood - Hailsham
Abbots Wood is a mixed woodland offering way marked forest trails, an adventure play area and picnic sites.
Friston Forest - Eastbourne
Friston Forest offers an infinite number of way marked routes for walkers to explore the beech woods. Its undulating terrain makes it great exercise for dogs.
Seven Sisters - Eastbourne
South Downs Way offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Southern England. From Seven Sisters Country Park at Exceat to Southease, the walking is extremely varied. Taking in open countryside, woods and the Cuckmere River until you reach Alfriston Village, one of the most picturesque villages in Southern England.
